Novels and Romances, very few of them are worth the trouble reading;— some of them perhaps do contain a few good morals, but they are not worth the finding where so much rubbish is intermix'd — Their moral parts are indeed like small diamonds amongst mountains of dirt and trash, which, after you have found them, are too inconsiderable to answer the pains of coming at; yet, ridiculous as these fictitious tales generally are, they are so artfully managed as to excite an idle curiosity to see the conclusion, through a tiresome length of foolish adventures, from which either knowledge, pleasure, or profit, seldom can accrue, to the common catastrophe of a wedding. — The most I have met with of these writings, to say no worse, it is a little better than the loss of time to peruse — but some of them have more pernicious consequences; — by drawing characters that never exist in life, by representing persons and things in a false and extravagant light, and by a series of improbable causes bringing on impossible events, they are apt to give a romantic turn of the mind, which is often productive of great errors in judgment, and of fatal mistakes in conduct — of this I have seen frequent instances, and therefore advise you scarce ever to meddle with any of them.

Where do you live, what do you live in, and do you like it? providence, ri, 3 bedroom 1/2 of a duplex, and i love it here; our rent is fairly cheap, our landlord is an american history professor, and it's big & in a nice neighborhood not far from school and all our friends. in about a month we're moving to denver tho so i can get a phd. braxton will be working on his phd dissertation :) but i don't know where we'll live yet. it causes a lot of stress!! 4. What do you do for a job? currently, teaching high school students at brown summer studies (fiction workshop), proofreading 17-19th century women's texts for the women writers project (it's a digital humanities thing) & research assisting for a sociology professor who is writing a book on the WHO and AIDS 5. What would you do with your time in an ideal world where earning money wasn't the top priority? stay home and write, write, write 6. Do you make anything? i love making soup, and i make books sometimes, and i make websites for film festivals and academic conferences, and i like to knit, and sew a little 7. What is your favorite food? tacos 8. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you choose? a cabin in the mountains 9. i won't be asking myself a question tonight 10. Show me a picture of yourself.
i think i am 18/19 here

11. Show me a picture of something that you think is awesome. i don't know where i stole this picture... i was looking up pictures of carole maso online and this came up somehow. my family had a camper like this when i was a kid and we had lots of fun camping trips in it... i loved sitting in the bed over the cab while we were driving, and my dad had a cb radio in the truck, and the table turned into a bed for me to sleep on. i even remember what it smelled like.

yesterday we went to the mall & saw kung fu panda on the IMAX screen. we watched the credits at the end so we could see my brother's name about 3 feet tall (he's listed under technical directors). so that was exciting. he's working on some movie about dragons now. |

i watched this doc on netflix watch it now called crazy-love about burt and linda pugach. i didn't really read the description before i watched it so i was fascinated by this odd looking woman with bizarre hair and sunglasses, and i couldn't figure out what was up with her wearing them. but then... it gets pretty horrifying and unbelievable. anyhow it was really interesting. if you are into weird old people. Amargosa is likewise an excellent doc about a lovely old woman which you can watch-it-now. she has an opera house in death valley and dances ballet! and you can go stay there!

what do you use to write in/with?
i like these blueline hardcover notebooks; they come college-ruled, blank or graph. they're a nice size, & sturdy. i usually try to get a bank one but the brown bookstore runs out of them often so i'm stuck with college-ruled till i fill the latest one up.

but i carry around a tiny, palm sized notebook, too. made by pentalic; these are super cheap (i think i got mine for 2.50 at the risd store) & really nice - they have an elastic band, a ribbon bookmark, a pocket in the back, & the paper is acid free. they come in different colors & sizes. mine's green, & braxton has a black one.

& i have a ton of these marvy lepen things to write with

although i'm getting into using calligraphy pens & scented ink - i i have j. herbin ink in rose & violet

& i like this steno (supposedly its also called blue pumpkin) nib

& this pfannen one (it has a rooster on it)

both made by brause.
and my notebooks smell good because of the ink. lol. |

i'm sleepy. i went to bed early last night but i woke up after about an hour; the room was hot & devoid of air. i read & wrote a little & turned on the window air conditioner, but i still didn't fall asleep till like 2am. and i had to get up early to teach. luckily the kids turn in their final projects on friday and next week will go like a dream and then it will be all over and we have to buy a car and pack our stuff and find a place to live and move to denver and then i have to go to school and take a bunch of literature courses, hopefully not chaucer, milton or dante (or beowulf) i feel like i had enough of that before to last me lifetimes, but the documentation says we have to take one course before 1700. i still like shakespeare, so that MIGHT be okay but i dunno, i'm not ecstatic. braxton's busy working on his dis in the midst of all everything. i wonder if du has any good film classes. i haven't gotten a catalogue or anything yet and it is hard to look at the online catalogue, it is fairly useless. i finished proofing idomen & now i'm onto an unfortunate mother's advice to her absent daughters by sarah pennington. |

i can see the bus stop out the office window, and there is nobody waiting for the bus right now. i can hear a bus coming up the underground tunnel though. nobody is allowed in the tunnel but buses, tho occasionally kids ride their bikes up it and the bus drivers get mad.
in a moment i'll go wait fo the bus. i have to file my proofreading text, and put my teacup away. home again, home again, etc. |

i dressed joanna in a fur coat and nylon gloves in a greenhouse this afternoon while john cayley filmed us. i was supposed to be ordaining her but i guess it was more frivolous than ordination cld be. it was damn hot in the greenhouse and i was nervous cause earlier when we were checking it out we got yelled at by some guy not to touch the plants. anyhow it was nice in there, lots of beautiful plants and a koi pond, even, with big golden fish in a too small pond.
it's hot and muggy and i have to go buy groceries, & i wore the wrong shoes for doing this. |

how much is wasted in worrying about entirely stupid things. 3 or 4 hours this afternoon browsing craigslist looking at apartments. it is very frustrating. |

a cover/rewriting of a text i'm proofreading.
it's a prose autobiography of a woman who tries to commit suicide twice. i've read up to the first attempt; she's in love with a man who is too beautiful (where men should not have beauty, her friend tells her, & he's portrayed as being really effeminate and her love of him and his good looks is quite interesting) & who rejects her, or they have some sort of misunderstanding, and so she's totally sad. she takes a large dose laudanum and has thoughts vague in manner, "and confused, but pleasant in their nature and impression."
after doing the quaker biography of the missionary in africa this book is like a fun fest. the narrative is done through a remembrance of a plantation owner in cuba, and there are lots of lovely descriptions of odd foods, like pastes served on rose petals and parrots cooked in pastry and birds of the forest kept frozen in snow (okay, those are in canada).
the same author wrote a book called Zophiƫl, or the Bride of Seven, which is from a narrative in the book of tobit about
"a young woman named Sarah who prays for death in despair. She has lost seven husbands to the demon of lust -- Ashmodai (a demon later frequently associated with homosexuality) who abducts and kills every man she marries on their wedding night before the marriage can be consummated. God sends the angel Raphael, disguised as a human, to heal Tobit (he was blinded by bird droppings that fell in his eyes) and to free Sarah from the demon."
i wonder if it's up for proofing, too. |
